Mission, Vission & Core Activity of the Organization

    BED exist to advance social and economic development of communities through knowledge creation and dissemination and through enabling new and empowering connections. This mission will be achieved through providing communities with livelihood, advocacy, and engagement skills and tools they need to work their way out of social and economic poverty.

  • Core Activity of the Organization

    BED embarks on the following themes: Health issues, Child based gender and family violence, Education support (Pre-primary, primary, secondary and vocational trainings), Economic empowerment to impoverished families, better parenting and nutrition education, Street girl’s rehabilitation, Child domestic labor and prostitution, Foster-care and adoption.

BED Programs & Activities

Integrated Early Childhood Development (IECD)

This program intends to strengthen the capacities of families and local community structures to support vulnerable children (particularly girls) access to a quality IECD programs within their areas. The area of action will include Education, Nutrition, Health, Early Stimulation, Care and Protection.Under this program BED Improves IECD service provision within the local community through “5x5 Model”.

Street Girls Reintegration (SGR)

This program focuses on street girls by ensuring that they grow and reach their full potential in a safe and supportive community. Through a use of Public Private Partnership Policy, BED works with families and their children providing counseling, strengthening family bonds, care-guidance, psychosocial and socio-economical support aiming reintegrating girls into families.

Women Economic Empowerment (WEE)

This program aims to economically empower women from HIV/AIDS affected and or socio-economic disadvantage households. These women and their families are empowered to an extent that they are able to earn sustainable income to support their families and especially meet their children’s school expenses. This program is also centered as a prevention strategy to child-vulnerability and or migrating into streets.

Adolescent Girls Empowerment (AGE)

The program aims to eradicate factors contributing to making young girls run to the streets or find themselves in a harmful environment. Adolescent’s girls are empowered through forming girls' clubs guided by mentors and local artisans and provided with training on issues such as HIV/AIDS, Sexual reproductive health, Health and Sanitation, Human rights, Self-esteem especially handicrafts training and financial literacy so that the girls, with the help of a micro-credit, can start their own small business and become responsible, self-reliant young adults.

Mitigation and Adaptation Mechanism to Climate Change

Current climate change challenges calls for CSOs involvement especially in creating awareness amongst the communities on the best way to handle climate change related challenges, how to deal with uncertainties arising from the same and how to handle the problem optimally in the interest of general public. In our Mitigation and Adaptation mechanism to Climate change BED improve societal knowledge of the impacts of climate change, strengthen the capacity of the community to respond to climate change challenge, encourage communities to engage in interventions that

Improved Social Well Being

Quality of life and social wellbeing focuses on how to deliver quality social services in education; health and nutrition; and clean and safe water to reaching more of the targeted poor. Interventions that seek to bring about quality improvements in the livelihood of the poor and marginalized will be emphasized under this objective. Apart from wellbeing, the essential target of this objective is to address population dynamics challenges and create human capital out of a learning population.

STORIES OF WOMEN IN CROSS BORDER TRADE IN KENYA AND TANZANIA

MONITORING, LEARNING AND POST PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION EVALUATION

SUCCESS STORIES OF WOMEN IN CROSS TRADE IN KENYA AND TANZANIA

This document presents stories of women engaged in cross border trade (CBT) between Kenya and Tanzania along Isibania in Migori County and Sirari in Tarime District, of Mara region borders; and their perceptions on the implementation of East African Community (EAC) common market protocol.

The perception survey was conducted in December 2019. The survey was conducted as a part of the implementation of the IIDEA project being implemented by Base for Education Dissemination (BED).As per project objective, the survey was seeking to bring to light and to the attention of the two governments (Kenya and Tanzania), EAC and other EAC stakeholders the success stories of women in cross border trade – the environment in which they are doing their businesses; factors behind success; challenges that they encounter day in day out in the course of doing business; identify enabling environments from their (women in cross border trade) perspectives; and their general perception of the implementation of EAC common market protocol.

BASELINE SURVEY REPORT

This report presented results of a baseline survey on the perception of women in cross border trade in Kenya and Tanzania through the border of Isebania and Sirari on the implementation of EAC common market protocol.

The survey sought to understand the perceptions of women cross border traders on facilitation conditions on free movement of goods between two countries, facilitation factors on transition from informal to formal cross border trade, challenges women in cross border trade face and strategies to increase women engagement in formal cross border trade.

With regard on perceptions of facilitation conditions on free movement of goods, the study sought to get an insight of women perceptions on the trade facilitation conditions, state of border infrastructures, cross border trade tariffs affordability, quality of service provided by border institution and agencies, state of corruption at the border, security of goods and services at the border and on access to finance for women in cross border trade as important tools in facilitation of free movement of goods.
